The Association I work for has asked me to prepare a technology plan. And, given the cost of Microsoft Licensing, I am seriously looking toward open source for the desktops.

I have run into two issues that I need help with. First, we are being required to maintain and Exchange Server by our parent organization. Is their a client that will interact with the Exchange 2K Server without losing any fucntionality (i.e. Out-Of-Office replies, archiving, etc.)?

Second, I need an ICA client and a Terminal Services client (I don't know much about either of the clients or the protocols they use). Is this type of client available for a Linux workstation, and where can I find it?

Thanks for your help.

As for Microsoft Outlook clones on linux, I believe Ximian Evolution ( is the best one I've seen so far, but you might want to take a look at the star office client sun offers. I don't think star office is free anymore though, so there is a hitch there, but it's still like a 10th the price of Outlook.

As for the other clients I'm not sure, maybe someone else knows.

Ximian Evolution will also connect to Exchange Server natively. See .
Although Evolution is free, the connector is from $69 to $54/seat, depending on volume.

For an office suite, there is also OpenOffice ( OpenOffice is available on a lot of platforms.

For connecting to Windows Terminal Server, look at rdesktop (
Citrix provides an ICA connector for many platforms themselves. ( ______________________________________________________________________

rdesktop is great, I use it every day to administer a few 2000 boxes.

It's small light and more customisable than the TSClient or RDClient, I think it has better color depth too.

I haven't used Evolution connected to an Exchange server yet but I use it for all my email. I like it a lot, it has some features that are better than Outlook and is slightly lacking in others (I still can't find how to play a sound on mail arrival).

Just my opinion. [smurf]
