Finding out which groups have access to file/folders

I need to rename a few group names but I'm worried that the files/folders associated with the groups will be lost - is this case?

If yes, is there away of discovering (listing) which groups have ownership/permissions etc on file and folders other than going to the properties for each folder?

Renaming a group shouldn't have any effect since the permissions are actually against the Group or User SID, not a particular name.
