You may not get the proper URL though. The site URL of lots of hosts resolve to the same Ip number, so a reverse lookup of these don't work too well. For example the sites I tried at Lycos UK resolve to 212.78.204.20 - including my site there at
is currently at 4.5.247.99 A reverse DNS lookup resolves to wbar1.sea1-4-5-247-099.sea1.elnk.dsl.genuity.net Putting that into the address bar, takes you back to my site.
There are lots of tools for doing this sort of thing at
and use their TraceRoute link. it takes an ip address and resolves it for you.
the only problem is that if you run it long after it came to your attention and it is a DHCP assigned address you may get incorrect info at the final location. it will however get you to the isp of the address.
whenever i see an unknown ip accessing my machine i run a program called NeoTrace that gives me a lot more details.
