I found the FAQ in this forum to find what maintance level a system is installed to:
instfix -i|grep ML

I downloaded ML8 via fixdist and installed it. The above instfix shows all filesets found up through 4330-06_AIX_ML. But then shows "not all found" for 07 and 08. I went back and instead of doing "update_all", It tried "update_latest". As I suspected, it failed for missing prerequistes, mostly PEX/PHIGS which I don't need for my applications.

Is there any other way to confirm that ML8 was installed and/or to determine, at least, what of the ML8 filesets were installed?

If you did
instfix -i |grep ML
and it showed not all found for a level, you can do
the following:

To see what needs to be installed to bring you up to a particular maintenance level:

#> instfix -ivk 4330-08_AIX_ML|grep not | grep ':'
or
#>instfix -ciqk 4330-08_AIX_ML | grep ":-:"

You can apply these filesets from an update cd or downloaded individually off the web.
'oslevel' command will still indicate AIX 4.3.3.0.
instfix -ik 4330-08_AIX_ML

If you do not need the PEX filesets you can uninstall them,
in smit...If they were the only thing keeping you from being at that level, once they are gone, the level will
be correct...If the fileset is not listed, it is assumed
that it is installed.

Hope this helps.
