Finding files thru a VPN connection

When working from home connecting thru a VPN, it usually takes a while to search for files thru Windows Explorer. However, if I open and application (Word, Excel, etc), and perform a file > open operation, it doesn't take too long to see the available files under the application.
Of course, this is not the most efficient way of going about when looking for files.
Has anyone else run into this? Is there anything I can do to speed up the file lookup?
Any hints are more than welcome.

I have encountered this as well and found using a host file speeds things up. The look up process for windows is first enternally at it's host file, then by way of wins and finally a broadcast.
