Running a MacG3 (OS 9.2) with both NS 4.77 and IE 5.1, the latest versions that will run on this machine. For various reasons it is not feasible nor practical to migrate to a later machine.

One of the websites we have used for years sets a cookie file that needs to be updated 4 times per year. Have had no problems for years. However they recently updated their site and now there are several things that neither of these browsers will do, one of which is updating the cookie file, although it is still possible to update the cookie file with FF & IE on later machines not at this location.

What I need to do is find the cookie files and update them manually each quarter, or write a short program of some kind to do it for me. I have tried using Sherlock to find them, but no matter what settings are used, I can't find them, even though I can view the contents of the cookie file in IE preferences.

So, how do I go about finding them?

I am assuming they are short text files that can be edited in Simple Text, but if not what are my options for updating them?

The latest NS is 4.8, oddly I can't find anything newer than 4.79 on the web.
The latest IE is 5.17, it is no longer on the web.

iCab is at 3.03 but you may need 2.99 depending...

Mozilla is the newest version of the old Netscape code, the last MasOS 9 version was 1.31 in 2003

I use Mozilla quite a lot, hope it helps

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Using Sherlock on my Mac with the word cookies I find:

Documents:Mozilla:profiles:Default User:(randomname).sit:cookie.txt
System Folder:preferences:iCab Preferences:iCab Cookies
Internet Explorer 5.1:preferences Panels:Cookies

No idea where NS keeps them

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

In Netscape 4.78, etc, each user has their own folder, which can be found in System Folder/Preferences/Netscape Users. The folder name is that of the user. The cookie document is called MagicCookie. This is where the bookmarks file is stored also.

You can display it in a text editor. If you modify it, you better keep track of the Type and Creator codes, so you can restore them after modifing the file so it will work with Netscape. You can use ResEdit for that purpose.

Hope this helps!

Jimbo:

Did a little bit more research and came up with these NS links:

It appears that NS is available for PPC through NS 7.0.2. When I have time, I will download and see if one of these versions will work and solve my cookie problem.

Also checked IE, and sure enough, Bill Gates is trying to force everyone to use his latest junk. Fortunately for me I have a downloaded .sit file for IE 5.1.7 in my archives should I ever need it.

I have not investigated any of the other ideas you came up with, but will when I have more time.

Jim:

Found the MagicCookie file. If I can't get a later NS browser to work, I can at least modify this file. It does look like I should write some kind of a script or program to do it for me so it works every time as the file is quite long and more complicated than I expected.

Looks like the easiest way for me to modify it would be to write a FoxPro program using low level functions to import & export the file.

Now if someone can tell me where to find the IE cookie file, I can at least have a chance of getting one or both working.

Ok. This was more than I had time to handle now, so I contacted the website owner about it. What they did was move the old code to a different location and remove all links to it on their website. They were kind enough to give me the links to the old deprecated code for me to use, so now everything works again for the time being.

I expect that at some point in the future they will delete this code, so at that time I may need to revisit this problem again, possibly with more available time on my hands.

Anyhow, thanks to everyone that helped me even though at this time I have decided not to persue this further.
