Hi all,

How I can get a list of SIDs on a local network,

I know that Oracle Installer does that because that is why Oralce require a unique SID over a network.

I need this because I need to Populate a list of Different SIDs on a
Network in my Application Installer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Faheem

I bet the Oracle installer just looks at tnsnames.ora, or something like that, to find out which SIDs are defined to Net8. It's definitely not a requirement for each SID to be unique across the entire network. For example, I could easily create two ORCL default databases on separate servers. The tricky thing is to define them to Net8 so that Oracle knows which database is which.

Mr Karluk,

you solved my One Problem thanks a lot:), you were right we can have two databses on two different machines with same name on a network.
But My other problem is that How I can Obtain a list of different SIDs on that Network.
Because My application uses Oracle Database , and during my application installation I need to Populate a list of SIDs(or Global database names) on that Network , because I don't want to put user in Confusion if the User is not a DBA, so that is why I want user to give a list of available Database Name on that network and then user can choose one of them.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Faheem

If you have Oracle Enterprise Manager installed, you can use the "Discover Services" utility. Unfortunately, I believe it will only discover services that have an Oracle Agent running on them.
Aside from this, I'm not aware of any methods.
