I need to find the first instance of data in a row in Excel. Not just one row, but 38,000. I am tracking enrollments.
Each column is a week number. Each row is an individual child. Each child enrolls in a different week.
Each cell contains tuition amounts (which indicates enrollment for that week). How do I find the first instance of enrollment, or the first instance of a column having a value in a particular row?
Once I've found it, I need to return the week number that corresponds to that first instance.
Help is appreciated. Thanks to all.

Children Week1 Week2 Week3
child 1 500 500
child 2 500 500 500
child 3 500

Hi,

First normalize your data using faq68-5287
[tt]
Row Column Value
child 1 Week1 500
child 1 Week2 500
child 2 Week1 500
child 2 Week2 500
child 2 Week3 500
child 3 Week2 500
[/tt]
Sort by Row and Column as above.

Change your headings and Name you ranges. faq68-1331
[tt]
Child Week Value
child 1 Week1 500
child 1 Week2 500
child 2 Week1 500
child 2 Week2 500
child 2 Week3 500
child 3 Week2 500
[/tt]
First week Child 2, for instance
[tt]
=index(Week,match("child 3",Child,0),1)
[/tt]

Skip,
You are a genius. I realize now that the sun doesn't shine in Portland because of the enormous shadow your brain casts.

Thank you for the links, and for the information. You are a very valuable resource, and I appreciate your help.
