Does anyone know: a) what the problem is ... I can use the find/change tool, but if I close the window when I am done my computer gets hung. If I leave the window open, everything is fine, but when I try to quit quark, hung again.
b) how do I fix it?

Just so you'll know you're not being ignored...
I haven't run into this in any of the versions of Quark I've used. Is it possible you are cutting and pasting the find or change contents from another program (such as MS Word?) where you might have Unicode text in the clipboard? I do know that Quark won't support that.

Yes, I have had a problem like this. It was so bad that I never did a find or I knew if I accidentally hit command-F I'd have to restart. And, darn, I can't exactly remember how to solve it. I think it might have been either trashing Quark's preferences or going to System 9.1. Skagit Valley Publishing Company

We might have more suggestions if you report the version of Quark you're using (with subversion number, such as 3.32r5, or 4.11 with 411 fix extension), the kind of machine you're on (Mac G4, Windows Pent etc/) and system version (Mac OS 9.22 or Windows XP or whatever). Then specific interactions can be discussed, and possibly fixed.
