I want to be able to set the configuration for the "Find and Replace Boxes." So instead of "whole field", I want to search for "any part of the field" etc

I had been using Sendkeys to do this but it doesn't seem to have the same effect on all machines. Some versions of Office act differently.

Is there a better way to pre-set the configuration I want for the Find and Replace boxes?

SendKeys can indeed behave erratically from version to version, machine to machine and even on a single machine from time to time!

The problem is that it's one of only three ways that I've ever seen posted to do this, and, like SendKeys they all have drawbacks.

You can set a given copy of Access by

Choosing Options from the Tools menu and on the Edit/Find tab, set: "Default find/replace behavior" to "General Search."

or you can set it thru code with:

Application.SetOption "Default Find/Replace Behavior",1

The drawback to both of these methods are that they don't take effect until Access has been closed and then re-opened.
