Filtering by using specify by host

I have browsed through about a month's worth of posts in an effort to find a way to curtail spam. Can I hear some pros and cons on using the filtering by host where an Internet address or address block can be entered? I now understand that one has to also block by domain name just to be sure. any thoughts? Thanks.
