filter by form not working with split database 1

I have an Access97(yes I know it's decrepit) database which I decided to split. The "Filter by Form" utility built into Access now only displays "Is Null" or "Is not Null" for options. I have searched for an answer to this problem for many hours, but can only find confirmation of it (no work around or solution). Does anyone know if there is any solution for this? If the answer is "there is no solution", then I will simply put the database back together and continue another direction. Thanks.

Although faq702-3619 FAQ relates to query selection for reports, the same technique can also be used for filtering form results.
It works using linked tables from Access 97 through to 2007, should you decide to upgrade.
