Filling in an attribute value using XSLT 1

Good Day,

I would like to fill in an attribute value. The following doesn't work -

Code: 
<xsl:variable name="warning"    select="autnresponse/responsedata/warning"/>

<result-row name="$warning">
</result-row>

Any suggestions?
