Filling a shape with color that has text on it

I am having trouble figuring out how to fill a shape that I have wrapped along the path of the circle. The help file says that it will automatically remove the color from the shape when wrapping text, but that you can later fill it separate from the text. Any tips as to how to accomplish this would be helpful. Thanks.

just drag the color you'd like out of the swatch palatte onto the object you'd like to color.
