I have a merge with a Fill in. At the moment when the merge runs we can't see the letter that the Fill in is going to put into. This is very inconvenient as each Fill in has a different value according to who is being written to. In other words if the letter is Jamie Bloggs he is 12th on the waiting list. If it's Michael Jones he is 2nd on the waiting list. And there can be up to 100 letters. It would be easy to lose your place. Is there any way that I can force Word to show the page? Or perhaps there is another way I can go about this. Any ideas will be appreciated. Learn something new every day *:->*

Why would you have a fill-in for this? Why wouldn't you just include that value in the data source?

A fill-in would be, I believe, more appropriately used if you created a file to be sent out monthly and you wanted to fill in the Month name or date.

How right you are, this would be the best way to do it, but... the data is collected from a bespoke Oracle database. A letter is being sent to parents informing them that their child is in X position on the waiting list for a place in a particular school. We could add a UDF (user defined field) and the the admin staff could go into each child's record and amend it to show the place but it changes every day. If a child is offered a place in another school and they accept it of course it throws all the others out. It's not as simple as it sounds alas. Until the company writes a routine into the software it is quicker to do it like this. We were using Crystal Reports to produce the letter then handwriting in place (not very pretty but unable to post edit Crystal) hence the decision to go over to Word using SQL to export the data. Take the data from Oracle out to Excel. In Excel, enter all of the "positions" in a new column. Use Excel as the data source. No?

Well it's a thought. I will put it to them. Thank you for the idea. Learn something new every day *:->*

For what it is worth. I've used DOCVariables
INSERT / Fields / Document Automation / Docvariable to create fields to be filled in from VBA code. I've not done MERGE per se so I don't know what a FILL-IN is. I have data that I collect for a customer in VB, pass a dictionary object over to WORD throught OLE to VBA that fills in the docvariables and prints it (New Acct forms at a bank).

Ooo crikey. Getting a bit complex for me I think. I have done only an introduction to VBA! Although I wouldn't need to use the Fill-in if I could do this.

Andrea: People here have been known to walk you through complete VBA routines and code... Just put smilies and winks in your posts... LOL LOL LOL

(They are the greatest. Me? I'll just get you in trouble with VBA.)
