I have set up a FileZilla SFTP server only once, quickly, and used local host user accounts. Pretty straight forward.

Can it be set up for non-computer users? Can I set it up with FileZilla users (not computer or AD users) and give them a home folder to which non-authenticated users have access?

We want specific customers to be able to drop files in there, but don't want to have to set up local user accounts if we can get away with it.

Or, is that a security disaster waiting to happen?

I've answered the question. When you install FileZilla server, it runs as a service. Create a local non-AD, non-privileged account and have the server start and run by that account. Make sure that user has write access to FileZilla Logs and configuration XML file. Then, when you create the FTP Root folders, give the local account modify access to the FTP Root files. Go ahead and create user login accounts in the server software, When users log into the FTP server, files they upload/create are owned by the FTP user.
