Why do some files have a * after their name and some don't?

e.g.
setenv.sh*
chris.txt

hmm get the feelings its for executables just as I typed those examples.

please confirm.

yup.

matters which view you're using, but yes *'s mean executables /'s mean directories ... etc

your ls is an alias
i am not on unix sys, /bin/ls -C whill show dirs, exec links and so on appending a / * ... to the file name
try /bin/ls
or check the aliases typing: alias |more

-----------
when they don't ask you anymore, where they are come from, and they don't tell you anymore, where they go ... you'r getting older !

jamisar,

I think it's the -F switch you're thinking of. -C forces it to list in columns. Annihilannic.
