Files saved as Illustrator docs turn to pdfs...

Anybody else had this happen?
I save a file in IL 10 (on a Mac) as an Illustrator doc, then close it. When I reopen it, it's turned into a pdf file, and it's been screwed up, so the document setup is "Custom," not as saved, and some elements of the page have been shifted out of alignment, both with the page and with each other...
VERY annoying, of course...have to Save As as .ai doc again...
I purposely DON'T save anything as pdf-compatible, which seems to help, but it's not 100%
Any ideas?
Thanks

Hmm, I was going to mention a default printer change messing with the artboard size. But that would be too easy. Anyone else?

Hmm,
is it possible someone else is opening the .ai file in Acrobat? Acrobat can open .ai files quite nicely then save them as .pdf. Thus screwing up text boxes and artboards.

Thanks for the questions...but, it's just me here on this machine, and this has happened simply from saving and opening files during a single session in Illustrator, no printing, and I don't have Acrobat, only the reader...it's definitely better since I started NOT saving a pdf-compatible .ai doc, but it still happens now and then.
