Hi Again,

I have Solaris 8 Loaded in my server.

Some of my application scripts creat files like:

tom2001.txt
tim2001.txt
sam2001.txt
jery222.txt
mia444.txt

and so on...

When i do a ls on the directory it doesnot display
the following files:

tom2001.txt
tim2001.txt
sam2001.txt

They are sort of hidden but cannot be listed by ls -al too.

But i can list them with :

echo *

and also if i rename them with anything other than the
string "01" in the file name. Isn't it funny ?

Is it a OS bug ?

Do we have a Patch for this ?

Do i need to Install the OS again ? Nooooooooo

Is it something to do with the way the Disk was partitioned
or is it a ghost :) ?

I'm wondering if there is a leading space in the filenames? Do the files show up if you do an ls *.txt? or try
ls *tom2001.txt. If the file appears, I bet you have a leading space in the filename.

If there is a leading space in the filename, the files would appear at the beginning of the list rather than toward the end, as you expect. If the list scrolls off the screen you may miss the listing.

The echo * command would put the files at the beginning of a list in paragraph form that most likely wouldn't scroll off the screen.

I had a similar problem a few years ago with some Oracle data files that had been set up incorrectly. It took a while to figure out there was a leading space.

I hope this helps.
