files not being saved as shown

I have a friend,who, after saving a file,will go to the folder in which she saved it,and will not be able to find it, even with the "show all files" option checked.Any Ideas?

what type of file are you saving, word.doc ?? is it consistent with one program or can you , for example, save a file in wordpad which does show up in My Documents. More information required but if you do have a problem with one specific program i would un install it reboot and re-install it.
