files created that administrator can't see who owns it

In an educational environment, program A+, I end up with files for that program that I as the administrator can't see who the owner is but I can take ownership. Any way to determine who created or why I can't see who the owner is?

Just a wild guess - does this system dual boot? Are they restored from a backup with security information that does not match anything on the workstation or the domain? What kind of files are you talking about - doc?temp?exe?
