files accumulating in mtadata

Hello,
We have a new Exchange 2003 server. The problem I have is the db*.dat files are accumulating in the C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\mtadata directory and never getting purged. Could someone please tell me why they might not be getting flushed out and how to correct this? I've read they should not be deleted (not that I would do that anyway). Also, I can't find the mtacheck.exe utility on either the server or the source CD. Any idea where it can be found?

What is the length of the files? If memory serves me, they are truncated to 1 byte and left there, not removed. The number of files you see is the highest number that existed at any given time.
