filenotfoundexception with applet-servlet communication

I'm running an applet/servlet/mysql database and I recently switched from Vista to Kubuntu. Everything worked fine in Vista, but in Kubuntu, I get a FileNotFoundException when I try to open a stream from the applet to the servlet. As far as I know, apache tomcat is working fine, and I haven't changed any of the applet or servlet code. Is there some other sort of configuration I need to do? I'm completely boggled.

Which user is Apache running as? This user must have a valid home directory and be able to write to it's home directory.
