Filemaker to Access conversion

Hi,
I am trying to convert a Filemaker 4 db into Access 97.
I have tried exporting records from FM to Excel which works but I encounter a problem when I try to import the records into Access via 'Get External Data' into an existing table.
The FM fields have different data types than Access.
Should these be exactly the same for this to work or should I be trying to do it in a different way?
If anyone knows how this can be done I would really appreciate it.
