FileMaker Pro image management

I am using Filemaker Pro to store records that may have multiple images attached to each record. I have two options and need help with both:

1. If I store the images in the database itself, how do I get each image into its field container (importing is not feasible)?

2. If I store the images in a separate folder and not in the database itself, how do I get the layout to open the related .bmp or .jpeg file in the container field on the layout?

Please help!
