Filegroup backups

Hi,

I'm having difficulty understanding a few filegroup back and restore options.

Is it true that you can only restore a filegroup if you have first restored the primary filegroup with the 'PARTIAL' option specified?

In other words, I could not restore a full database backup, a full database differential backup and then a single filegroup backup before applying the transaction log. I would instead have to restore the full database backup, the differential backup and then the log without using the filegroup backup.
