This has to do with file types. I downloaded adobe adrobat reader and installed it. It will not automatically read a pdf file. It trys to open the file with WORD 2000.

So, I went to my Compuer --View--- Options ---File types--- and tried to find where WORD was trying to open it. I could not find it. I also tried to enter .pdf as a new entry.It said "the extension auto-pdf is already in use please try another extension. DOH !

Ive gone to OFFICE MS website and cant find anything.
I tried uninstalling abobe and reinstalling and still this does not work.;

Thanx

You went to the right place. Just keep looking in the list until you find .PDF and just reassign it.

That is the problem. There is no listing under file types for PDF and when you try to add it in I get the message;

"pdf in use by 'pdf_auto_file' choose another extension.

tmandu, try the typical file associations fix.

Find a PDF file on your system via Windows Explorer.

Hold left shift key down and right-click file name.

Select Open With option.

Select Acrobat Reader to open it with, it should be the first item in the list--usually anyway.

Checkmark the "Always use this program...." box.

Hit Ok.

If it opens, close it, and test the file again.

Other issues:
You must uninstall Acrobat Reader 3 before installing 4 or at some point, it'll get messed up.
Acrobat Reader 5 is the latest version and you may just want to uninstall any others and install that, which should fix the file associations anyway.

Thank you - many times over - this plagued me on several computers where I work. I appreciate it.

You're the best !
