Hi,
first post, apologies for its baffled tone...I want to know whether its possible, how to and whether its advisable to transfer a file using FTP from OS/390 using a CICS/COBOL module. I kind of figured that this type of thing would normally be done in batch with JCL and FTP, but I have no idea about online. Also for both online and batch will I get a return code on completion of a successful transfer or, that the transfer has been started, or that the order to start the transfer has been given, or does it just depend on the way the system is set up ...all help much appreciated.

Andy,
I'm not sure quite what you are after here as you could be talking web based host (FTP) or even client server type of application where the CICs transaction is initiated from the PC. For sake of argument I will assume that what you want to do is initiate a file move from the mainframe to PC, from within CICs (if I'm wrong, get back to me and stop reading now!). In order to do this, you will need some form of connection between the two operating systems. I've not used a product that is available from within CICS (although I'm sure there is one) but have set up JCL from within CICS and then submitted a job though the Internal Reader (INTRDR) to perform the transfer using something like Connect Direct.
Hope this helps and is not too rambling,
Marc

Hi Andy,

Another way to do it is to create the batch JCL for the FTP job from your CICS transaction and submit it via a TDQ defined as an internal reader (INTRDR). You just write the JCL stmts to the TDQ. Ask your Sysprog what the name of that TDQ is.

Regards, Jack.
