file size when saving as illustrator 8

i am working in illustrator 10 and need to save my document as illustrator 8, but when i save the file size grows to over 1 Gig...the linked tiff is only 159 Mb, size of document is around 20 inches X 20 inches, rest of document is vector art and text...i have not had this problem before, anyone have any ideas as to why file size is so large...??

hmmmmmm.... is it possible that the image is getting embedded after you save down to Illus. 8? When you save it the box checked for save with linked images.

Only other thing I could think of would be if your using all kinds of transparency effects and its flattening them into raster because Illustrator 8 cant handle transparency. 20x20@800dpi CMYK = just about 1 GB.

1 GB is kind of excessive though
