I have win 98 and linux redhat8.0. 98 on one laptop the linux on the other lap top. can I share files between the pc and how?

both are on the same network a dhcp linksy router.

I know to allow file sharing on the win 98 machine and to make sure that the computer name is the same as the linux machine.

how do I change the computer name [if necessary] and allow file sharing on the linux box?

thanks mike.

The software you're looking for is samba. check it out at ... chances are, your distribution already includes samba. It is a Windows File Sharing client/server.

No, you shouldn't do that, each host should have a different name.

And you've got to make sure DCHP is configured correctly on both the linux and windows hosts.

I REALLY hope that helps.

how do I check my computer name on my linux sys?

to check the computers name you can type hostname in a shell, to share files between linux and windows you'll want to look into samba

Hi Guys I'm also new to Linux. I've got a redhat linux9 box. I went to the shell(I presume this is the command prompt) and typed localhost - and got the following message localhost localdomain.
Is this my box name - How do you change the computername in linux?

Use the 'hostname' command:
Code:
hostname flugh
would set my hostname to 'flugh'. Use the '-f' switch to set the fully-qualified domain name.
