Here is the what is happening at the minute;

The VPn connects fine I can access email and ping IP's in my network but when I try and access shares on my server by using \\servername\sharename it only brings the offline version up ?

But yet if I try \\ipaddressofserver\sharename it prompts me for a username and password and once entered I can access all of the shares.

Please could someone help me as I want to just put in the name rather than the IP address

What type of VPN iis it?
Is it set up to provide DNS and/or WINS to the VPN client?

What happens if you ping the names both ways?
Ex. ping nameofserver
ping nameofserver.yourdomain.com

On your pc, open notepad and grab the hosts file located under \windows\system32\drivers\etc and add your hostname and IP there.

After that you will be able to map to a share by hostname.
