I have a file server with shared folders for 30 users. Each PC user is mapped to one shared folder with their name. We backup the shares, not the local PCs.

If they are on their desktop and they delete a document located on the share, it is not in their local Recycle Bin, or in the file server Recyce Bin. Where did it go?

If was deleted from a share then it is gone and must be restored from the last sucessfull backup.

Undelete" from executive software, I won't build a server without it. Sure beteats going to tape

Up to the minute file recovery, multiple revisions, logs of user deletions, aloows users to undelete files if they are permitted. Great software

Maintenance contract ?, not much to maintain

It may be free, but unless you have it set to create a shadow every 5 minutes, you won't get recently delete files back..shadow copy is resource intensive, so you won't want schedule it for more than a few times a day, so "Undelete" is still the best solution for deleted files..by all means use shadow copy, as "undelete" takes over where shadow copy leave off.
