I wanted to start blocking users from storing MP3s on our file server.

so I try to load the File Server Managment Console from Control Panel, Add Remove Programs, Windows Components.

but it isnt listed there.
all I have is :
connection manager administration kit
connection point services
network monitor tools
simple network monitor protocol
wmi snmp provider
wmi windows installer provider

how do I get the File server Management Console added if it doesnt appear there?

Are you running Windows 2003 R2?

thanks, that got me to the next step.

however, all I see under filesvr.msc is:
shares (local)
sessions (local)
open files (local)
disk defragmeter
disk defragmenter (local)

I dont see the File Groups object anywhere?
that is what I need to get to so I can block MP3 storage.

so is this just an option for 2003 R2?

and if I dont have software assurance I would have to purchase another windows 2003 license to upgrade from 2003 standard?

Kiss me silly if I don't seem to have that exact same problem. Thought I had it licked in a Google... Might just be a 2k3std problem. I don't see the node either, though the instructions were very clear... and I know I loaded it correctly. Same problem... just the standard file server management tools. No Quota, or File screening nodes...
I'll be dipped. Teach me to post before I get it figured...
Sorry to OP for getting hopes up.

Got it! Chipperjonesrules, install the File [bold]Resource[/bold] Management from Add/Remove Windows Components. This will add the File Resource management console to the Administrative Tools menu. From there, you can set up file screening, quotas, etc.

At least I figured it out... for my sanity too...

I still dont see it.

under add/remove window components I have:

accessories and utilities
application server
certificate services
email services
fax services
indexing service
internet explorer enhanced security configuration
management and monitoring tools
networking services
other network and file print services
security configuration wizard
terminal server
terminal server licensing
UDDI services
update root certificates
windows deployment services
windows media services

I think I am out of luck, as every reference to File Resource Management refers only to 2003 R2.

what hurts is that (as far as I can tell) I would have to purchase a license to move from 2003 sp2 to 2003 R2.

My bad.... it's located under management and monitoring tools. It's there, coz I'm using the same release/version as you. Once installed, it says it needs a reboot. Get a convenient time and do so. Even if you don't reboot, you can still see the console under administrative tools and even open it, just don't make changes until you do the reboot, just to be on the safe side.

gee, I hate to sound like a broken record, but I still dont see it.

all I see under Management and Monitoring Tools are:

connection manager administration kit (not installed)
connection point services (not installed)
network monitor tools (not installed)
simple network management protocol (installed)
wmi snmp provider (not installed)
wmi windows installer provider (not installed)

and details is greyed out for all of them.

Now that IS odd. I have several other tools aside from the ones you mentioned:
Connection Manager Admin Kit (not installed)
File Server Management (installed)
File Server Resource Manager (installed)
Hardware Management (not installed)

and I just installed the File server management and resource management tools. I'll have to do my own search and see what I can find, but the tools shouldn't be greyed out unless your rights do not permit you to install them. I'm using a Domain Admin acct to do my access, and I assume that you are doing the same.

Let's see what we can find.

OK, I am officially dumb! I post way to fast to be breathing. You are using SP2 not R2 SP2.
per wikipedia:
Windows Server 2003 R2, an update of Windows Server 2003, was released to manufacturing on 6 December 2005. It is distributed on two CDs, with one CD being the Windows Server 2003 SP1 CD. The other CD adds many optionally installable features for Windows Server 2003.
including
Storage Management
File Server Resource Manager (storage utilization reporting)
Enhanced quota management
File screening limits files types allowed
Storage Manager for Storage Area Networks (SAN) (storage array configuration)

so essentially, you would need that R2 (the second disk) in order to be able to install the features. Which really sucks because you would think it would be available as an add-in to the core 2k3 functionality. Blood from a stone, that's their motto...
Sorry chipper, looks like that's that for this one... at least we have an answer...

Hence why I asked if you were running 2003 R2 :-D

Perhaps my post should have read,

Are you running Windows 2003 R2? Because if you are not then you need to be so you can use FSRM

bummer.

so I would actually have to upgrade my windows 2003 R1 SP2 server to R2, and that would cost some bucks I would assume, since we dont have software assurance.

what would be my option, just buying a 2003 R2 license?
is there any discounts for upgrading? (probably not)

Yeah, you'd have to buy an R2 server licence for very server you want to upgrade to R2. You do not need to purchase new CALs however.
