I'm not really sure which category this question should go so I am putting it here. If someone thinks it should go somewhere else, let me know and I will put it there.

If I wish to download and save a file from a website and I already have a file of that name in my Downloads folder, the new copy gets saved with the file name in this format: <file-name>(n).xxx in Firefox and <file-name> (n).xxx in Windows Explorer and Chrome (note the extra space in front of the left parentheses).

Is there a way to make the save simply overwrite existing files without adding the revision number? I have already run into a problem with this issue as it pertains to one of my clients downloading a file that I've made available on a website so I've had to intervene and have him manually delete delete the existing files (he ended up doing the download 3 times before he called me so he ended up with the original, outdated file Document-name.pdf as well as Document-name(1).pdf, Document-name(2).pdf, and Document-name(3).pdf.

Since my instructions clearly state to download file x and then open it up, I've run into problems that I now have to provide a work around for.

Thanks in advance,
Jerry Scannell

I'm not sure if this will help but look at all of the options the about:config page has for downloads: This one may set it to a constant but I think it is Windows, or explorer, that is facilitating the name change. Check this spot for a shot in the dark: browser.download.saveLinkAsFilenameTimeout

EDIT: I could have sworn Firefox was listed as a browser you were looking for an answer to as well. Guess I made that part up. Ill keep looking for Chrome but IE doesnt have any additional configs to edit unless there is a reg tweak somewhere.
