File, Save As freezes in Word97 when pulling down folder list

One user goes to save a file using file Save As and pulls down the folder/drive list to choose a different folder. At that point, no list is pulled down. The only thing that happens is that the current folder appears highlighted. Word will not respond to any other clicks.<br>

Audit trail with user seems to indicate nothing new has been tried on computer. <br>
<br>
OS is Win95 OSR2. Virus Shield installed. Problem occurred with and without IE4 installed. Mouse settings are not standard.<br>

Funniest thing is, if you cancel Word (Ctrl-Alt-Del, End Task), and re-open it, it seems to work fine. Re-boot the machine, however, and you've returned to square one.<br>

Virus scan turned up nothing, Scandisk nothing major. <br>
<br>
Nothing directly relating found at microsoft.com or mcafee.<br>
<br>
Steps still planned:<br>
Surface scan.<br>
latest and greatest virus definitions.<br>
<br>
Has anyone seen anything like this? <br>

Further play found that this occurred in other apps as well. In addition, Windows explorer would often fail. In the end, I re-installed Win95 (Yeah, I know) and this took care of it -- so far.
