file read error on networked dbfs

a new customer was experiencing a lot of network errors reading dbfs across a network. Each pc crashing 4 or 5 times a day.

8 Windows7 or Vista client pcs and a 2003 server.

Checked all the usual suspects but still kept happening.

Then yesterday I was going through one pc's windows event log and noticed that in each case just before my app crashed the folowing appeared in the system events
“The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service entered the running state.”

A quick google turned up this

so we disabled the service on all pcs (including the server) and today we had our first error free day.
