File permissions change on FTP. From SCO to LINUX

I have a machine (SCO 5.05) that I had TAR a file and then GZIPed it further. Then I transfered the file via FTP to a LINUX machine. Once on the LINUX machine I unzipped the file and for some reason some of the files the permissions have changed. Anyone know why? Not all files the permissions change just a few. James Collins
