How to set the file access permission from the console.
I am using netware 5.1

I wanted to give full access to the root(SYS) to all
users.

Like in unix chmod 777 , what is the command i got
to give at the console in novell netware 5.1

You can't really access the file system from the console. There are a few obscure ways to do it, but the way to do it is to run NW Admin. It is in the sys\public\win32 folder and is called nwadmin32.exe. You must have admin rights to make changes.

You can also run the java program, it is called console one. The latest version is available from Novell.

Personally, I like NW Admin, but it is a memory hog.

There are some nice third party utilities that will do what you want. Check out JRB Utilities.

By the way: You DO NOT want to give full access to the root of the sys volume. All a user needs is read and file scan. You should use or create another volume for the users to have. It is like giving them full rights to the Windows directory, they could completely destroy your OS. Plus it is a security issue, it could get you hacked.

Giving full access to the SYS volume is a very bad idea and will lead to disaster when somebody accidentally hits that DEL key. The SYS volume is the NetWare equivalent of the Unix / partition. One mistake and you are toast.

If you could tell us what it is that you need to accomplish, I think we could come up with a safer solution for you.

This is a test server and i am the only user
who will be accessing it.

When i was trying to run some other third party
software (Oracle) it gives me an error like

"relative pathnames not allowed"

So i was thinking if it is something related to file
permissions, so i want to basically give full
permission to the entire file system (SYS) and
check if i get the error again.

I wanted to give Read, write, full access to all the users
in the netware 5.1

If it is only a test server in a test tree, I would suggest that you go into NetWare Administrator, find the volume object and add the user in question as a trustee of the volume with Supervisor rights. It's not pretty and I certainly would not advise it in a production environment, but for your testing it will do.

Again, you can not control access to Netware from the console, you have to do it from a workstation running the Netware Admin. or Console One.

I suggest making yourself a user then making that user equivalent to the admin user. Double click on the admin user and add the user you want to the "Security Equal To Me"
page.

That will give you admin rights to all files and folders. I would not give an explicit trustee right to the volume to anyone besides what is defaulted to the admin user.

Also, make another volume if you haven't already to put your files on. Do not use the sys volume for file storage.
