The viewer identifies some files that were created in WP as "File type cannot be determined". There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why this occurs. Does anyone have any suggestions

You mean the viewer in the wp enhanced File Open dialog?
You could email a file that has this problem to my khobson at aaahawk dot com and I will see how wp11 and the earlier versions view it.
Have you tried wplook.exe to repair the files in question? Maybe you has some corruption.
Try selecting another printer as the default.
