File on desktop (Autocad File) has correct extension. It opens program but AutoCad says file not found. but then you can browse to it from within autocad and it opens fine. It is not a short cut on the desktop, it is the actual file. I also tried it from files in folders.

Right click on any .dwg file. In the menu choose "Open with"; "Select the program from a list". A dialog box will appear showing a list of programs. You should see AutoCAD (If not, click the "Browse..." button and find your acad.exe file). Highlight it and check the "Always use this program to open these files" and hit "OK".

It does open AoutoCad like it should. But rather than the drawing that i clicked on opening, AutoCad gives me the message that it can not find the drawing. Even though I launched autoCad from that exact drawing.

In Windows Explorer select "Tools" pulldown, next is "Folder Options", and finally "View". Just a short drop down from the top of this list is the following check box: "Hide extensions for known file types". Make sure this is unchecked.
