File Limit for a single directory

Does anyone know if there is a limit to the number of files that can be held in a single directory. I have a directory that has 16000+ files in it and I'm wondering if it is causing the application that creates the files to behave strangely.

Should make no difference. If the app is old you may get probs at 16,383. Otherwise you will only get probs when you hit the OS limit / file system limit.
