file has been marked "executable" and I can't edit it

i get the messege "the folder'2001' is marked executable. You are not allowed to put files into an executable folder on this server"
we just relesed a "disgruntled" employee who changed the avaliability of the web folders and i NEED to be able to edit it. I already tried checking properties and security.... any helpful hints?

were the folders also set as read-only? That would keep you from changing the other properties.
