this isn't probably specific to 2003 but on this server if I say file->new it takes 5 minutes before it will respond. I couldn't remember where to find information about it so ran shellexview to control all that stuff, and it pauses for 5 minutes loading #30 of hundreds. Once loaded I saw nothing unusual though? I just ran proccess monitor while it did it but didn't come up with much either. Any clues anyone? o.o

In the past I've found this to be problems with network drives that can't be located.

Yes this happens to us when there are mapped network drives that no longer exist or when the file server is experiencing problems.

Make sure you don't have any mapped drives that no longer exist.

Good luck,

I think all the mapped drives are fine. Would that really interfere withit if the file/new list contains the standard stuff only?

Not sure why as I didn't look in to it after I realised it was related to network drives.

I'm no expert, but I'm assuming it has to enumerate the drives when a File -> New is initiated. So, if there are issues with, say, DNS or cluster/NLB it may not be able to connect them at that time.

Also, try logging in to that machine with an account that does not have any GPO's applied - e.g. Local Administrator. This will eliminate anything to do with failing/faulty GPO's unless of course the GPO's apply to local accounts.

And also try the same thing with no mapped drives and see if you still have the issue.

Good luck,

Just an update to say I *think* I found what I'd been looking for and I *think* it's now sorted. What I remembered was a place you could see a list of templates that come up when you open file->new. What I did was get the MS tweakui powertoy and goto the templates section. It was mainly office and default windos stuff, but the top one was some adobe program thing which I think had a dead icon. So I unticked it and hit delete so there it went. ow file->new is fine and instant. But I guess only time will tell. If I knew where that tweakui setting was looking I could've remove the entry myself ;P
