I've got spread sheets available for download. Links to the files just open the files in the browser. I want to make it simple for users to download and save the files without having to explain the 'save target as' procedure.

When the xls files open in a window or frame the excel menus don't always show.

How do you make the Open / Save dialog box open when the link or button is clicked??

You have to bring your self down to the same level as the users. Believe it or not we would have to instruct users to extract zips.

I just want them to recieve the same dialog box they would get if they were downloading anything else from the web. The only instructions I would have to give them is - save to My docs or to the desktop.

We are talking about small shop owners who are just getting used to doing things online.

It's a cruel world out there and I have to assume the lowest common denominator. I call it the moron principle.

My Original query was posted on the dreamweaver forum and they suggested some server side solution would be needed. I hadn't thought of zips though.
