Hi, I'm trying to go the a website and download some information. I'm using IE5 windows 98se. The file download box appears and you can see the paper crossing from one folder to the next but then I get an error message saying that the page cannot be opened, this page maybe unavailable, please try later. This happens on all sites regardless of which ones I try. Can ne1 tell me a fix for this problem.

Cheers

What with my low IQ and all, I get easily confused, I'm a little unclear on just what your doing here, are you saving web pages or downloading zip files, images, pdf files, etc or something else?

Also, do you get a "Save As" Window?

Do you use a proxy server or firewall?

Are you using, or do you have any download managers such
as GetRight or GoZilla?

Have you cleared your Temp Internet cache?

Turn off any web accelerators, and search for a file called hosts (not hosts.sam). If you find it, open it and delete
any web page entries.

One usenet post I found suggests it may be a cache or cookie problem. The poster suggests:

Export your cookies using file/import and export and then shut down all programmes and boot into dos. Run the following commands from the windows directory:

smartdrv
deltree history
deltree tempor~1
deltree cookies

Reboot.

This advice assumes the default paths of c:\windows\history,
c:\windows\temporary internet files and c:\windows\cookies are correct
for your machine.

Reboot.

I see a lot of other folks in usenet posts having this problem, I have not seen any solutions.
