File download as file 1

I would like to list a number of files on my web site so that users can download the original file.
I have tried various variations of <A .....> but I always get the contents of the file displayed on the screen rather than a file download.
How should I do this?

1. Zip the file. Zipped files are usually downloaded rather than opened in the browser.

2. Change the content-type for the file type you want to be downloaded. This has to be server side, so find out which server you are using and ask that in a forum that handles that specific server.
