File Disappearing on Save - Netware 5.0

Hey,

I have a very frustrating problem. A network I look after is running Netware 5.0. They use a lot of Microsoft Works Database files. One of the users has a problem when she opens one of these files residing on the server.

She clicks save and a message pops up saying 'Could not save file please select a new location'. If she then hits cancel, the file is missing from the server. It cannot be retrieved by using salvage files on the Novell Client (4.90 SP1). If she clicks retry, the file is recreated on the server with a size of 0 bytes.

She does not have erase priviledges for that particular directory and she does have write and modify priveledges. Other people who use the same file in the same directory who appear to be set up exactly the same have no problems whatsoever.

Has anyone come across anything like this ever before?? I have to say I am completely stumped, and it really doesn't help that I know next to nothing about Novell. Could it be a setting on the client or a user setting?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Regards

Does the problem follow the user if she uses another PC? If not, you're probably looking at a fault with the PC and it may be worth reinstalling the NW Client or even rebuilding it.

If the problems follows the user, it could be an issue with the User account and it might be worth creating a temp account with the same rights to see if this resolves the issue.

Thats some good thinking there TheLad, I haven't tested to see if the problem follows the user. This will at least allow me to narrow the problem down to the user or the machine.

If I have more questions, I'll let you know.

Many thanks!

i think works is strange - it's another one of these programs that actually needs erase rights so that you can save the file -

salvage will not work as she hasnt deleted the file so you cant salvage it

this isnt actually a novell thing - it's just traditional sloppy m$ programming.

Thanks Terry.

I considered giving them Erase rights, but when I edit the Works database on another machine with a user who is set up in a similar way, the edit works fine. I still haven't tested with this particular users login on another machine, but when I do I suppose it will be a little clearer what is wrong.

Although I would prefer if they didn't use crappy MS programs, it is probably the easiest for them as they are user friendly enough and these people aren't exactly technical users!

Thanks again!
