I'm trying to build an import routine, which works fine when I hard code the filename and path, but the users want to be able to browse to the file using the 'open' or similar dialog, how do I create this code and then attach this to a button ?
 
Here is the code, I altered it somewhat for my application (all the *.xls stuff at the bottom). I remeber that it was a little tough to figure out in the begining but after playing around a little bit you get the hang of it.

You might also want to try
Excel.Application.GetOpenFileName
Very easy to use.

This opens a dialog similar to what your users are
familiar with. It returns the name of the file selected
as a string, or False if no file selected, e.g.

There's a corresponding GetSaveAsFileName
which allows users to enter a file name to save under.

Your app will need a reference to the MS Excel library
for this to work.
 
Thanks for the help, unfortunaltely the data import is not form XL, its from a ; delimeted file which the users need to be able to browse to and then load in.
 
The tip from mikevh will should still work as I assume that it will allow the viewing of all files (not just Excel) and will return a string with the full path to the file you want to open.
The first piece that I sent you will allow to control what file types the user can point to (*.csv, *.txt...) but will take a little more "setting up". If I ever run across a need for the original code I would probably create a class module that housed the orginal code and modify it for the few filetypes that I am usually looking for so I could reuse it over and over again without having to back into the code every time.
 
CautionMP is right. GetOpenfileName and GetSaveAsfileName
will allow you to browse and select any sorts of files
you want. There is a FileFilter argument that allows you
to limit the types of files the user can see or save as,if you want to do that. The default is all files.
 
Followup:

When I use the GetOpenfileName method while I have an Excel document open, the dialog box opens up in Excel, not Access. Is there any way to block it from opening in Excel?

I don't understand what you mean by "the dialog box opens up in Excel, not Access". Can you explain, please?
 
If an excel document is open and the code is executed, nothing happens in access but the excel window in the taskbar begins to blink. When that excel window is maximized, the dialog box is open in front of the spreadsheet instead of the dialog box appearing in front of the form in access.

 
I think (without seeing your code) that this is happening because GetOpenfileName is a method of the open Excel app. Try instantiating a new Excel app and calling the GetOpenfileName method through that, e.g.
