File creation date set to 12/31/1979

We have several folders in which the file creation date has somehow been changed to 12/31/1979 at 11:00 PM.

This is of course not accurate.

Any ideas as to what may have caused this, what effects it might have and how we can fix it?

I saw that happen caused by Virus software.. not that exact date but similar.. all files the software touched got changed. In the case I saw, it was some Mcafee suite for home users and did not support a networked environment.

Very difficult to fix, but you can stop it from causing any further damage if that is what it is.
