File copy dialog hangs

Hi all,
First, I did google this before posting, and only found some not-very-useful info, like "Run chkdsk", change your boot settings, etc.

Anyway the problem is the File Copy dialog box hangs, so I hit 'Cancel', and that does nothing, it *says* it's cancelling but the box just greys out and still hangs.

I don't have a lot of solidly verified isolating characteristics, but it seems to be when copying between shared drives, and it also seems to be when the file I'm copying is being overwritten, though I haven't isolated that for sure yet. The files are not huge files, and the network is very fast and very reliable, and neither my disk nor the destination disk is bad, and I have full admin rights.

Can anyone tell me what this could be caused by? It appears to be a Vista/Win7 issue from the general google responses, but I just couldn't find a response that seemed to make sense.
Thanks,
--Jim

Are the machines with the Shared Drives running the same operating system?

Can you get any improvement if you test one machine from within "Safe Mode with Networking" and try and copy to the other machine (that is in Normal Mode)?

Have you missed out on any of the Windows 7 Reliability Updates?

You can see a list of them here after you first load and enter the Windows Update Catalog site in order to install the necessary ActiveX files.

Or just search it for "windows 7 reliability update".

Does the copying even start or is it hanging straight off without even moving any data?

Have you looked at the Event Viewer on both machines to see if any errors are being thrown up at copy time?

linney,
The machines my Win7 machine are copying to are all XP machines. I have done all of the 'critical' updates and, I believe, all of the 'optional' updates as well, up to last Friday (Oct 1), though I have seen posts about this very issue going back to 2007 with Vista so I'd hope that any fix would have made it to at least win7 beta.

When I do updates I only see the Important and Optional udpate categories, and I've got to assume 'reliability' updates would be in the Important category.

Anyway, the copying appears to start, that is, the status bar makes progress. It's hard to tell if it's put the 'placeholder' file in the directory listing of the target because much of this, in my case, seems to be when overwriting existing files (which are not in use and I have full right to).

So I will google the reliability update and the event logs and see if I can find anything,

make sure that all the NIC drivers are up to date...

tell us how you are set up, e.g. how the PCs are interconnected, how your network is setup... attempt to turn off IPv6 and see how it functions after that...

I've never come across this issue with my systems, both the XP workstation can write to Windows 7 shares as well as to the 2008R2 shares, W7 can write to XP shares and the 2008R2 shares... (no IPv6 involved except on the 2008R2 server)...
